I swear I changed the title six times already I cannot think of something creative T-T
Heyyo! This blog post is for those people who are gonna write a novel but aren't sure how their format should be.
(Bear in mind it's pretty much targeted at self-publishing authors, since if you're with a publishing company they'll likely to fix everything for you.)
For your manuscript, it really doesn't matter as long as it's something you're comfortable with, because a manuscript is exactly what it says it is - still a manuscript. Could be any font, any size, any color, really.
I like Garamond, 12 pt, black (or red.) Gives me a cool, professional feeling.
Before I go on, remember that it's YOUR book and it all depends on what YOU like! Now ...
Let's get into it!
Page size - there are a bunch of popular page sizes, including:
- 4.25" x 6.87"
- 5" x 8"
- 5.25" x 8"
- 5.5" x 8.5"
- 6" x 9"
- 7" x 10"
The bolded ones are the most common that you'd find. Personally, I like the 5-by-8 range, but Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng was 6-by-9 and I still liked it.
If you're aiming for something a little on-the-go, smaller sizes would be your friend. If it's something a little more "sit in a cozy corner and dive in" kind of book, then a huggable paperback is better.
Font - this little detail is ... what's the word? I don't know, but it doesn't differ from book to book.
Chapter (A) Headings: 14-16 points
Sub-title (B) Headings: 12-14 points
Body Text: 10-12 points
As for the font itself, Garamond and Times New Roman are the top two. Other ones include:
They're pretty similar but Garamond is by far the best *wink*
Cover - now, the saying goes "Don't judge a book by its cover" and, ironically, we don't judge anything by its cover like we do books.
So - think up a book cover that STANDS OUT among the rest and just screams READ ME! A book that halts you in your tracks and makes your brain go-
Oh! Idea! Sketch something of what you imagine it to be and hire an artist to design it for you. Trust me - in a big thing like this you're going to want to hire the best artist - or graphic designer - there is.
That's pretty much it! The easy, basic layout of your next bestseller.
(Hey, it could be a bestseller. You gotta have high, high hopes!)
And until next time!
